The 2nd week of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is here. For those of you who participated in the events of Week 1, thank you. The National Cybersecurity Institute is using the events of this month to participate in the nationwide initiative to expand the public’s knowledge on cybersecurity and promote a unified information security movement.
During Week 2 of NCSAM, the National Cybersecurity Institute would like to challenge you again. This week’s activity is called the Crypto Challenge. Data encryption is an important part of information security in the modern digital landscape. Hackers look for poorly encrypted networks to infiltrate, which can result in a devastating loss of private information. Week 2’s challenge puts you in the role of the encryption hacker.
For everyday this week, there will be a new cryptographic challenge released on NCI’s Website. Challengers must use different code-breaking techniques, such as the Caesar shift, transposition, and substitution, to decipher the encrypted message. The messages will all have a cybersecurity theme. At the beginning of each day, a new puzzle will be posted and the answers to the previous day’s challenge will become available.
This is an excellent way to learn about NCSAM, and to test your hand at encryption cracking. The National Cybersecurity Institute will also be covering the subject of encryption much deeper in a podcast and additional article. Additionally, NCI’s case study for this week is entitled “Cyber Crime Breaches and the Deep Dark Web.” Be sure to check back for these things as NCSAM progresses.
