It’s rather hard to believe, but 30 years have now passed since the first .com domain name was registered on March 15, 1985. Fittingly, it was registered to Symbolics – naturally enough a computer manufacturer headquartered in Massachusetts back in the day. Only a year before in 1984 the first Apple Macintosh had made its appearance, Michael Dell started selling computers that same year, the Internet was in its infancy, and the Los Angeles Raiders had just won Super Bowl XVIII.
A lot has transpired over the years as .com grew and people recognized its commercial value and signed on. Microsoft joined in 1993, Amazon and AOL in 1995, Google in 1998, Facebook in 2004, and YouTube in 2005 to keep us all entertained.
Business has been booming to say the least…E-Commerce sales (in the US alone) in the 4th quarter of 2014 reached nearly 80 billion dollars and Internet sales are showing no sign of slowing. In 2013, WalMart had $10 billion in online sales, Staples had $10.5 billion, Apple had $18.3 billion, Amazon over $67 billion, and Chinese giant Alibaba, with an astonishing $240 billion in online sales. And…it all started with that very first .com
So…Happy Birthday .com…..and many more prosperous years ahead!
