United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) issued an alert on July 5th advising Symantec and Norton users of recent vulnerabilities discovered. US-CERT is part of Homeland Security and performs vulnerability research. The researchers discovered eight vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to gain access to a business’ network and take control of it.
The alert states that the vulnerabilities impacted 24 products on key platforms (OSX, Windows and Linux). Products impacted are marketed under the Symantec name and the Norton name (Norton products are made by Symantec). Symantec released patches and hotfixes.
What You Should Do
If you do not have auto-updating for patches, you should update your software immediately. If you have auto-updating in place, ask your network specialist to ensure the recent patches were installed correctly.
Symantec has detailed information about threats, risks, and vulnerabilities on their website in the Security Center section.
