Key software vendors have issued their first round of patches for 2016, plus announcements of discontinued versions. If you have not yet patched or moved to newer software releases, start the new year right and take action immediately.
Microsoft announced last week the discontinuation of support for the following:
• Windows 8 (but 8.1 is still supported). Windows 10 is the newest release, which was released in July, 2015.
• Explorer 8, 9, and 10. You should be on Explorer 11. There are a few exceptions for support on some releases, such as for Explorer 9 for Window Vista users. Check out Microsoft’s Security TechCenter for more information.
The software company also announced a number of patches for various products, including Explorer, Windows Edge (internet browser for Windows 10) and Office. Several of the patches are listed as critical, so businesses should be sure to install all the patches immediately.
Last week Adobe announced patches for Acrobat XI and Reader XI as well as the DC versions. Seventeen of the fixes were deemed critical, so these patches need to be installed as soon as possible.
The company also repeated the information that they no longer support Acrobat and Reader 10.x releases. Businesses still running either of these earlier versions should update from the Adobe site as soon as possible.
WordPress issued a new release, 4.4.1, in early January. They strongly encourage all users to update to the new release. It is a security release plus includes some bug fixes.
Other Software Patches
Don’t forget other software your business is using when reviewing patches. Major shippers like FedEx and UPS periodically release patches for their specialty software. Have your cyber security expert put together a list of all your software and check each vendor’s website for the latest patches and releases.
Make it harder for the cyber criminals to access your data by having current software for all of your applications.
