Welcome to all law enforcement officers and security personnel. This blog has been developed to provide operational officers valuable information about the tools, tactics and techniques of cyber criminals who are committing crimes and creating security breaches right in our neighborhoods. It is estimated that 80% of crime committed today has a cyber-component. Being able to identify this cyber-component has two important outcomes:
1. Identification of cybercrime tools, tactics and techniques will lead to arrest on evidence that we may not have previously identified.
2. Upon lawful arrest and/or search, knowledge of cybercrime will lead to additional charges.
There are a great many cyber-crime issues that will be discussed over the next several months. Among the important areas we will be exploring are:
A. Social Engineering
a. Dumpster Diving & Electronic Surveillance
B. Credit Card Fraud
a. Skimmers & ATM Hacks
C. Point of Sale Attacks
a. Event Tickets & Merchandise Coupons
E. Online Dating
F. Human Trafficking
G. Cyber Bullying
H. Protecting Police Information
We will also be learning how to handle cyber evidence and the importance of securing the chain of evidence relating to cyber crime. Criminals have embraced technology and used it like any tool, to their advantage. In the weeks ahead we will be exploring how they use this new tool of technology and what we can do to lessen the impact it has.
