According to researchers there are a great many cybersecurity positions that are currently unfilled in the country. Kerry Butters reports that “…it was revealed that by 2017 there will be a global shortage of 2 million cyber security professionals“. What that means is that employers should be extremely careful in retaining the cyber professionals that they currently employ.
Unfortunately there is a tendency for women cyber personnel to drop out of the field leaving employers with an increasing number of vacant positions. There are numerous reasons why females drop out and they include inequity in wages, no mentoring, lack of equity in promotions, bias in the work environment, lack of flex hours, and an unwelcoming work team. An enlightened leader can rectify all of these situations if they put their mind to it.
The shortage of skilled cyber professionals is only going to increase in the years ahead and employers are going to be scrambling to find warm bodies to fill those empty seats. Welcoming women into the cyber workforce and working hard to retain them is in the best interest of an organization. Remember, the keys on a computer don’t care what gender is touching them.
