The main role of the military is to defend our country from outsiders threats. In previous years, this exclusively meant taking up arms against one’s opponents. However, technology has evolved, and out of that evolution came new weapons and warfare. While many of the new technologies advanced the military’s capabilities and readiness to defend the country, they also introduced new threats. The battlefield is no longer always a tangible place. The inclusion of the Internet has increased the need for cyberdefenses across military technologies, especially because of the vital roles cybersecurity plays in the modern military.
The inclusion of new technologies has increased the need for cyberdefenses across military devices, especially because of the vital roles cybersecurity plays in the modern military.
The military is responsible for protecting some of the nation’s most important data. The personal information of state officials and important civilian contractors is stored on government servers. When the Office of Personnel Management was hacked, much of that sensitive information was leaked. “[The OPM] attacks targeted not only military information but issues as diverse as freedom of speech and critical infrastructure systems controlled by dozens of private sector companies,” Kevin Newmeyer of the National Cyber Security Institute said in a recent article. Because of this, the Department of Defense made plans to tighten cyberdefenses on government servers.
The military is also in charge of protecting crucial secrets like troop locations, launch codes and other data that is important to the nation’s security. According to Forbes, there are more than seven million devices linked to the Department of Defense network. That means that hackers have increased opportunity to access the state secrets mentioned above. Cyberdefense implementation and cybersecurity training are important in ensuring that these secrets remain confidential.
Many of the military’s modern weapons rely on technology. Drones, communications system and other devices are technology-based. A hack on any of these devices could be catastrophic for national security. Therefore, the military uses cyberdefenses and teaches cybersecurity best practices to its servicemembers to reduce the risk of cyberattacks and insider threats.
The Department of Defense announced that it plans to increase the number of cybersecurity employees in the near future to solidify the cyberdefenses of the military. You could become of the individuals responsible for the nation’s cyber safety.
