For those women that have achieved some level of success….congratulations. It may have been a long hard road to your senior level position, or your C-suite position as CEO, CFO, CIO, or perhaps you are the proud owner of your own successful business. Now that you have ‘made it’, perhaps it is a good time to reflect on the many barriers that you overcame, the people that helped you along the way, or the great personal decisions that you have made to get where you are. While you are in that introspective mood, perhaps you can recall how much you wished at some point you had someone, anyone, who could just point you in the right direction in your upward journey—someone with wisdom and experience who could help you focus your energies on the right path instead of going off into the bush to no good end.
What if that someone was….you. Think how much you would have appreciated it if you could have put out your hand and been helped. Now you can help that struggling new hire up to learn the lay of the land, earn what’s important, or at least a few words of encouragement. It’s not too late to be helpful; there are still young women who are in the same position you were in years ago, that can use your help. Yes, there are more opportunities for women now than there were when you started, but there are also just as many pitfalls, blind alleys and…sometimes glass ceilings as you faced.
No, you can’t save the world or help everyone to find their footing on the ladder of success, but if you wanted to you could help at least one person. So, the next time you are sitting in the corner office contemplating future strategic moves, take a moment to reflect on where you are, how you got there, and what you can do to help another woman along.
Women helping women…give it a try.
