Hackers from outside our nation’s borders continue to probe our national defenses on a routine basis. To avoid a cyber ‘Pearl Harbor’, our defenses are being continually upgraded to match the evolving digital situation. New hardware and software is being added, systems upgraded, new units activated and more and more personnel added to the task of cyber defense. The U.S. Air Force recently announced that it is planning to hire as many as 1,000 new cyber professionals to bolster its ranks. This proposed hiring, despite budget cuts, illustrates the importance that is being attached to our cyber security defense. The new personnel will be part of the 24th Air Force, which is headquartered at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. The 24th currently has a budget of approximately $1 billion, has a local staff of nearly 500 people and oversees over 5,000 people within the cyber umbrella of the U.S. Air Force. With the Department of Defense (DoD) recognizing the importance of cyber security, we can anticipate that this hiring trend will continue in all branches of the service. Skilled professionals who are well educated in cyber security are in growing demand by both the government and private sector, and Excelsior College’s five cybersecurity programs that are certified to meet the National Security Agency’s Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) Training Standards can help you achieve your career goals.
